Thank you for checking out Tech News. This is where I intend to give important updates about news in technology. Topics will vary from IoT devices, computer security, operating system updates, scams, frauds, malware and more. These topics are intended to be relevant to common tools and practices many of us use on a daily basis, for work or leisure. The goal is to increase awareness of your cyber risks and how you can mitigate them. Let's get started!
Where to begin?
Often figuring out where to start can be the biggest hurdle. Let's start small with a few tools you can use to start securing your digital life today.
Use a Password Manager
Password managers are the best way to store your passwords today. There are a variety of options with both paid and free versions. These services store your passwords in a database and encrypt the contents using a master password, which is the key used to decrypt your data. These are secure ways to manage your passwords and even have features built in to detect if your passwords have been leaked.
The services I recommend to use are Bitwarden or Dashlane. Click to visit their websites and get started today. Additionally, you can book an appointment, and we can work on it together!
Setup a VPN
While a VPN does NOT increase your security, it does provide privacy from packets that are sent in plaintext. For example, every time you visit a website, you use a protocol called DNS, which maps your website's name to its public IP address. This protocol uses data sent in plaintext, meaning anyone who can see your packets (your internet service provider, for example), knows which website you are on, though they cannot see which page you are currently on. If this is something that concerns you, then a VPN can help solve this issue by encrypting all your data before being sent. Keep in mind, a VPN will do nothing to protect you from malware executing on your machine.
Additionally, a VPN can also be used as a direct "tunnel" to a remote network, commonly used for businesses to access their networks from anywhere. The service provider I recommend is Private Internet Access or NordVPN, click the links to visit their websites. Schedule an appointment today if this is something you are interested in.
Use Encrypted Email
Prevent your emails from being read and analyzed by using encrypted email service providers. This offers another layer of privacy as the provider does not possess the ability to analyze your emails. By default, emails are sent in plaintext and are only encrypted as they are in transit, not necessarily while in storage.
My recommendation for this service is ProtonMail, an encrypted email protocol developed by Swiss scientists to safeguard their valuable research. They have plans starting for free for basic needs to paid plans that include a whole suite of tools including mail, calendar, VPN, expanded storage, and more.
There is a lot to discuss here and the next post will focus in detail on how to set up, migrate, or transfer your passwords to a password manager. This simple, free tool is one of the most effective ways to ensure you are protected from unauthorized access to your accounts. Set up a free consultation if you are looking for more information!
